The lake and woodland walks on your doorstep

Walton is wrapped in water and woodland, and most of it ends up in a dog's coat. The roughly two-mile path around the lake at Anglers Country Park runs past a reed-covered embankment and wetland, so a dog that wades in comes back with that distinctive pond smell and a layer of fine silt down its legs and belly. The lakes and ponds over at Walton Colliery Nature Park do exactly the same.

Then there's the woodland. Haw Park Wood, the ancient woodland that borders Charles Waterton's old Walton Hall estate, drops leaf litter, twigs and seed cases that work their way deep into a feathered or curly coat. Spaniels, doodles and anything with leg feathering pick the worst of it up.

Canal towpaths mean mud, and mud means matting

Walton sits on the Barnsley Canal, and the towpath (part of the Trans Pennine Trail) is a favourite local loop that links Anglers, Haw Park Wood and the grounds of Walton Hall. After rain it turns to claggy mud that cakes into the coat behind the ears, under the legs and around the tail, and once that dries it knits into the kind of matting that's sore to brush out at home.

I'm just over the fields in Hall Green, about a five-minute drive, so I see a lot of this. A bath and tidy lifts out the silt and canal mud. If it has already matted I'll de-tangle it gently rather than dragging at the skin, and tell you straight if a section needs clipping out.

A calm one-dog room, and how to book

I groom one dog at a time in a quiet converted garage at home. There are no kennels and no other dogs around, which suits the water-lovers Walton is full of, along with nervous or older dogs. I'm IPET-qualified and cover full grooms, puppy first grooms, bath and tidy, nail trims and de-matting, with prices confirmed before I start.

Booking is a quick call, WhatsApp or message, and I like a short chat about your dog's coat and temperament first so I can set aside the right amount of time.

Frequently asked

Grooming in Walton, your questions

My dog always swims in the lake at Anglers, can you sort the mess out?

That's a regular for me. A bath and tidy lifts out the lake silt, reed bits and pond smell, and I'll dry the coat right through so your dog goes home properly clean rather than damp and musty. Book a full groom if it needs the works.

We walk the canal towpath and Haw Park Wood, how often should my dog be groomed?

If you're regularly on the muddy towpath or through the woodland, a feathered or curly coat usually needs a groom every six to eight weeks to stay on top of the matting. Brushing between visits really helps. Tell me your routes and I'll suggest a sensible interval.

My dog picks up twigs and seed cases in the woods, can you get them out?

Yes. Bits of woodland debris and the odd burr work deep into feathering and curls, so I comb the coat right down to the skin as part of a groom. If anything has knotted around it I'll ease it free gently rather than tugging.

Do you groom large dogs and doodles from Walton?

Yes, all sizes and coat types, including the retrievers and labradoodles you see all over the local lakes and trails. Large and doodle full grooms start from £60, confirmed before I start.

Can I drop my dog off and collect later?

Yes, a drop-off and pick-up works well and is how a lot of Walton owners fit a groom around work. I agree the timing with you when you book, and I'll only have your dog in, so yours is never left waiting in a kennel. A quick call sets it up.
