The lake walk that brings dogs to me wet

I'm at 4 Castle Meadows in Hall Green, just up the A61 Barnsley Road from Newmillerdam Country Park, so the lake is more or less my local patch too. The surfaced path that loops the water is about a mile and a half, and that ring is what most Newmillerdam owners walk every day, past the old Grade II listed boathouse.

It's a lovely walk and a reliable way to send a dog home damp. The dam was made by penning back Bleakley Dyke and Bushcliff Beck, so the water carries silt and a green, ponds-end smell once a coat soaks it up. Retrievers and spaniels that go straight in come back heavy and whiffy, and that lake water sits in the undercoat long after they look dry.

Up to the arboretum and the Chevet line

Head past the lake and the ground changes. The arboretum on the hill at the far side has more than a hundred kinds of tree and a soft, leafy floor that turns to bluebells in spring and to leaf-mould and burrs the rest of the year, all of which work their way into feathered legs and ear fringes.

If your dog ranges further, onto the old Chevet branch line trail or over towards Seckar Wood with its heathy, ancient woodland, you'll know the difference: bracken seeds, twigs and proper claggy mud rather than a clean lakeside rinse. Those are the coats that most often need a de-matting session as well as a wash.

What I'll do once they're back

I keep it to one dog at a time in a quiet converted garage, no kennels and no other dogs around. After a Newmillerdam walk that usually means a proper bath to lift the lake silt and smell, a thorough blow-dry into the undercoat, and a tidy of the legs, feet and ears where the burrs collect; if it's gone past tidying, I'll de-matt carefully rather than clip to the skin.

I'm IPET-qualified, trained at Mrs B's Grooming Academy in Leeds, and I groom every coat type from a puppy's first groom to a full clip on a doodle. Full grooms are £40 small, £50 medium and £60 large or doodles, confirmed before I start. Booking is a quick call, WhatsApp or message, and I'll talk you through a plan to keep the coat right between the lake swims.

Frequently asked

Grooming in Newmillerdam, your questions

How far is Keith's K9 Care from Newmillerdam?

About half a mile, a two-minute drive. The salon is at 4 Castle Meadows in Hall Green, just up the A61 from the Country Park, and plenty of Newmillerdam owners walk down.

My dog always smells of the lake after a swim, can you help?

Yes, that's a regular one. The dam water carries silt and a pondy smell that settles into the undercoat, so a proper bath and a full blow-dry lifts it far better than a quick rinse at home. A bath and tidy does the job if a full groom isn't due.

What do you do about the burrs and leaf-mould from the arboretum walk?

The leafy ground past the lake and up at the arboretum drops burrs and seeds straight into feathered legs, feet and ear fringes. I work those out by hand and tidy the feathering so they're less likely to pick more up next time round.

My dog comes back matted from Seckar Wood and the Chevet line, can you sort it?

I can. Bracken, twigs and claggy mud off the heathland and the old railway trail tangle a coat quickly. I'll de-matt carefully where the coat can be saved, and only clip shorter if matting has gone too far to brush out kindly.

What days is the salon open for Newmillerdam dogs?

I groom by appointment rather than fixed hours, and a Saturday tidy after a muddy walk and swim around the lake is always popular. Call or message me on 07926 471552 and I'll confirm a time that suits.

Can I walk round to you straight from the lake?

Plenty of owners do, as Castle Meadows is barely two minutes from the Country Park. A dog that's already done the loop round the water often settles better for its groom. Let me know roughly when you'll arrive so I'm ready for you.
