Crigglestone walks that show up in the coat

I'm only about 1.4 miles east of Crigglestone, so I see plenty of dogs straight off the local walks, and those walks tell you a lot about what I'll be brushing out. Newmillerdam Country Park is right on your doorstep, and that big loop round the lake is wonderful for dogs, but the unsurfaced sections through the woodland on the slopes turn rutted and muddy after rain, so feathering and undercarriages come in caked. If your dog has been swimming off the promenade, that lake water sits in a thick coat and needs drying through properly rather than left to go musty.

Head the other way towards Netherton and Middlestown and you've got Coxley Woods and Coxley Beck. They're gorgeous in spring under the bluebells, but a magnet for mud, leaf litter and seeds that work into spaniel ears and poodle-cross legs. A coat that's walked there regularly does best with a steady grooming routine rather than a big rescue job once a year.

A quick, quiet run from the village

From High Street or off the A636 Denby Dale Road it's a short hop over to me in Hall Green, with no town-centre traffic and no circling for a space, so you just pull up outside. It's an easy drop-off if you're already heading past the cricket ground or out towards Painthorpe.

Your dog is the only one here. I work one dog at a time in a quiet converted garage at home, with no kennels and no other dogs barking, which suits the nervous, the elderly and pups who'd find a busy commercial salon overwhelming.

What I do and how to book

I'm IPET-qualified (trained at Mrs B's Grooming Academy in Leeds) and offer full grooms, puppy first grooms, bath and tidy, nail trims and de-matting, with prices published up front and confirmed before I start. The poodle crosses I see most from this side of Wakefield, the cockapoos, cavapoos and the like, mat fast off muddy autumn walks, so a regular six-week slot keeps them comfortable rather than facing a clip-off later.

To book, drop me a call or message and I'll ask a couple of quick questions about coat, age and temperament so I can set aside the right amount of time.

Frequently asked

Grooming in Crigglestone, your questions

My dog gets filthy at Newmillerdam, can you sort that out?

Yes, that's a lot of what I do. The woodland paths on the slopes go rutted and muddy after rain, so I'll bath the mud out, dry the coat right through and tidy up the legs and feathering. If your dog swims off the lakeside, let me know so I make sure the dense bits are fully dried rather than left damp.

We walk in Coxley Woods a lot, does that affect the coat?

It does. Coxley Beck and the woodland mean mud, leaf litter and seeds that catch in ears, between pads and up the legs, especially on spaniels and poodle crosses. A steady routine stops it building into matting, and I'll always check ears and feet while I'm working.

How long does it take to get to you from Crigglestone?

About four minutes by car, roughly 1.4 miles. I'm on Castle Meadows in Hall Green (WF4), with easy parking right outside, so it's quicker than heading into a town-centre salon.

Do you groom nervous or older dogs?

Absolutely. The calm, one-to-one home setup is exactly why a lot of nervous, rescue and senior dogs come to me. It's the one dog in a quiet room, so I can take it steady and break off whenever the dog needs a minute.

Do you groom cockapoos and cavapoos?

Yes, the poodle-cross coats are among the ones I groom most often from your side of Wakefield. They mat quickly off wet, muddy walks, so I'd usually suggest a standing appointment around every six weeks. I'm IPET-qualified across every coat type, so any breed is welcome.

My dog's coat has matted after a long gap, can you help?

Yes, de-matting is something I handle regularly and check over on the day. Where a coat is too far gone, I'll explain the kindest option rather than put the dog through hours of pulling. Matted-coat work starts from an extra £10, confirmed in person before I begin.
