Cannon Hall and Deffer Wood mud, sorted properly
Cawthorne sits over the Barnsley boundary in S75, a quiet stone-built village with Cannon Hall Country Park, Farm and the Victoria Jubilee Museum on its doorstep. It's well cared-for and made for walking, sitting on the rolling farmland between the Spencer Arms and All Saints' Church, so the dogs here clock up plenty of miles, and that shows in their coats. The run up to me in Hall Green is roughly five and a half miles and about fifteen minutes, heading north towards Newmillerdam and the Wakefield boundary.
Those 70 acres of parkland at Cannon Hall are a gift and a problem in equal measure. The lakes, waterfalls, walled garden and long grass make for a proper romp, but a wet spaniel or a doodle comes home with half of it stuck to the legs and belly. It's the same on the woodland trails through Deffer Wood, reached along the Jowett House Beck, and on the field paths climbing towards High Hoyland. That kind of country mud works deep into a thick coat, and a quick bath at home rarely shifts it for long.
A calm, one-dog-at-a-time groom that earns its keep
Some Cawthorne dogs come in for a full clean-up after the Silkstone Waggonway and the Cawthorne Boundary Walk, others just for a regular bath and tidy, and an unhurried groom makes the difference either way. I work on my own, one dog at a time, in a converted garage at 4 Castle Meadows. There are no kennels or cages here and no other dogs barking through the wall, which suits a nervy rescue or a pup's first groom far better than a busy high-street place.
I'm IPET-qualified, trained at Mrs B's Grooming Academy in Leeds, so the handling is careful and the finish is tidy. A full groom runs from £40 small, £50 medium and £60 for a large breed or doodle, with de-matting from £10, and I'll always confirm the price before I start. To book, call or message me and we'll sort a time. Parking is straight outside, so there's no faff at the end of a country drive.

Frequently asked
Grooming in Cawthorne, your questions
How far is the salon from Cawthorne?
About five and a half miles, roughly a fifteen-minute drive north towards Hall Green in Wakefield (WF4). You head out of the village and up towards Newmillerdam, and I'm on Castle Meadows with parking right outside.
My dog gets filthy at Cannon Hall, can you sort that out?
Yes, that's a lot of what I do. The parkland, lakes and woods leave coats caked with mud, and a bath and tidy or a full groom clears it down to the skin. If the coat has matted badly, de-matting starts at £10, and I'll always tell you straight what the coat needs.
We walk Deffer Wood and the field paths a lot, does that affect the coat?
It does. The woodland trails along the Jowett House Beck and the climbs towards High Hoyland leave damp, gritty coats and the odd burr, and on longer dogs the belly and legs hold it. I'll wash it through, dry properly and trim back so it doesn't keep matting on the next walk.
Do you cover Cawthorne and the rest of S75?
I do. Plenty of my dogs come from Cawthorne and the villages around it, including Silkstone, High Hoyland, Barugh Green and Kexbrough. It's an easy run north, and the quiet, one-to-one groom is worth the short drive out of the village.
My dog is nervous or a rescue, will that be a problem?
Not at all, and the calm setup helps. There's only ever one dog in the salon, so there's no pack of other dogs, no noise and no rush. I take nervous and rescue dogs slowly, and for some that means building it up over a couple of visits rather than forcing a full groom on day one.
Is it really calmer than a normal grooming salon?
Yes. Many high-street salons run several dogs through at once, with cages and constant barking. Here it's just me, one dog at a time, no kennels. For a dog that finds the Cannon Hall crowds and a busy groomer too much, that quieter setting tends to make the whole thing easier.
