A short hop down Painthorpe Lane

Durkar sits just off the A636 Denby Dale Road, tucked between Crigglestone and Kettlethorpe with the M1 running past at junction 39. From the village it's a quick run down Painthorpe Lane to me at 4 Castle Meadows in Hall Green, about 1.8 miles, five minutes door to door. There's space to park right outside, so you're not circling a busy high street with a dog in the back.

If you commute through J39 or do the school run past the New Inn, dropping off on the way and collecting later works well. I'll agree the times with you when you book.

"Dirt marsh" lives up to the name on a wet Durkar walk

Durkar's name comes from the old Norse for "dirt marsh", and any local who's walked the field paths after rain will tell you it still earns it. Pugneys Country Park is only a few minutes north, with miles of lakeside path round its 250 acres, and Newmillerdam's sloped woodland is an easy drive too. Both walks send dogs home with muddy legs, damp feathering and the odd burr.

A word on the water: Pugneys can get blue-green algae in warm spells, so I'd keep dogs out of the lake when the signs are up. If your dog has been in either lake or through the wet woodland, I'll give the coat a proper wash and a full blow-dry rather than just a quick tidy. It's the lake silt and grit that mats a coat behind the ears and under the legs if it's left to dry in.

Spaniels, doodles and other feathered or curly coats pick up the worst of it on these walks, which is why a regular six-week visit keeps things easy to manage.

Calm, one dog at a time

I groom one dog at a time in a quiet converted garage at home. There are no kennels and no other dogs waiting, so puppies, nervous and older dogs can settle and I can work at their pace.

I'm IPET-qualified (trained at Mrs B's Grooming Academy in Leeds) and do full grooms, puppy first grooms, bath and tidy, nail trims and de-matting, with prices listed in full and confirmed before I start.

To book your Durkar dog in, give me a call, WhatsApp or message and we'll have a quick chat about coat, age and temperament first.

Frequently asked

Grooming in Durkar, your questions

How do I get to you from Durkar?

About 1.8 miles, five minutes down Painthorpe Lane and across to Castle Meadows in Hall Green (WF4), with easy parking right outside.

My dog's filthy after the field paths around Durkar, can you sort that?

That's most of what I do here. The name Durkar literally means "dirt marsh", and the lanes and field paths show it after rain. A proper wash and full blow-dry lifts the mud and grit out of the coat, rather than letting it dry in and matt. Tell me how mucky things have got when you book.

We walk at Pugneys and Newmillerdam, does lake water cause problems with the coat?

It can. Pugneys lakeside and Newmillerdam's woodland leave coats damp, silty and full of bits, and Pugneys gets blue-green algae in warm spells, so I'd keep dogs out of the water when the signs are up. After a swim or a muddy woodland walk I'll wash and dry the coat fully so it doesn't matt behind the ears and legs.

I commute through M1 J39, can I drop my dog on the way?

Yes. Junction 39 and the A636 are right on the doorstep, so a drop-off on the commute or school run is easy. I'll agree a drop-off and pick-up time with you when you book.

Do you groom doodles and spaniels from Durkar?

Yes, doodles, spaniels and every coat type are welcome. The feathered and curly coats pick up the most mud and burrs on the local walks, so a regular six-week visit keeps them free of mats. Tell me the breed when you book so I can plan the right amount of time.

Can you sort a coat that's tangled after a gap between grooms?

Yes, de-matting is a regular part of the job and I work through tangles patiently at the dog's pace. If a coat has gone too far to brush out kindly I'll say so and explain the gentler option. De-matting starts from an extra £10, confirmed before I start.
