"I'd been looking for a trustworthy dog groomer in the Wakefield area for a while, so glad I found Keith's K9 Care. Took my black Labrador Bella in and Keith was calm, professional and clearly knows what he's doing. Bella usually really doesn't like bath time or even her paws being touched but she was completely at ease with Keith, which says a lot. She came back looking and smelling great too. If you're after a dog groomer in Hall Green or around the Barnsley area, well worth a call."
"Took my Belgian Malinois, Red, to Keith for grooming and couldn't be happier with the result. Anyone who owns a Mal knows how thick their coat is and how much they shed, but Keith did an amazing job. Red came back looking absolutely stunning, with his coat looking fantastic. Professional, friendly service and clearly great with dogs. Highly recommended! Now it's time for Red to go and get mucky all over again!"
"Keith was great with Beano and a real dog lover. Beano came home silky soft and not the stinky boy he was. Beano will be back to see Keith for another bath after his holiday 🐾🐾"

The detail

What's involved in a puppy first groom.

A puppy's first grooming experience matters more than people realise. Done gently, puppy grooming teaches a young dog that the salon is a friendly place where they'll be calm and confident for the rest of their life. Get it wrong, or do it with a queue of barking adults in earshot, and it can take years to undo.

The puppy first groom at Keith's K9 Care is a slower, calmer version of a normal session, usually 45 to 60 minutes. We start with a sniff-around so your puppy can investigate the room. Then we bring in the sounds, with the clippers running near them (but not on them) and the warm hum of the dryer at a distance, and we reward each calm response with treats. Only when your puppy is settled do we move on to a gentle bath, a light tidy of face, paws and rear, and a careful first nail trim.

Most puppies can have their first groom from around 12 weeks, once they've had their second vaccination, but it's worth a quick chat first. We'll ask about coat type, breed, and how they handle new noises at home, and pick the right moment.

Follow-up puppy grooms (the second and subsequent visits up to ~6 months) build on the first. Puppy intro groom: from £25. Follow-up puppy groom: from £30. They cost less than a full groom because we deliberately keep them shorter and lower-intensity. At this stage we're after a confident adult dog, and the cut itself comes second.

The handling you do at home is what makes the salon feel familiar. In the weeks before the first appointment, spend a few seconds each day touching the parts a groomer needs to: hold a paw and press gently between the pads, lift an ear and look inside, run your hand down the back legs and over the muzzle, and pair each one with a treat. Stand your puppy on a non-slip surface like a bath mat so the feeling of a raised, steady footing is nothing new. None of this needs to be a big training session. A calm thirty seconds after a meal is plenty, and it means the first groom feels like more of the same rather than a run of brand new experiences.

A word about the finish, because a first groom isn't really about the haircut. The aim is a confident dog, so we keep the session short and reward-led, and that sometimes means a tidy rather than a full style. I would much rather stop while your puppy is still enjoying it than push for a perfect line and teach them the salon is something to endure. These early visits are building a habit that pays off for the next ten or more years.

Most owners are caught out by the adolescent coat change, so it helps to know it's coming. Somewhere between roughly six and twelve months many breeds shed the soft puppy coat and grow their denser adult coat, and during that changeover the two textures tangle against each other and mat far more readily than before, sometimes seemingly overnight. This is the moment to step up brushing at home and keep grooms regular rather than stretch them. A puppy that sailed through with almost no knots can suddenly need real upkeep, and staying ahead of it through those months saves a harder groom later and keeps the good early experiences intact.

Frequently asked

About puppy first groom

When can my puppy have their first groom?

Usually any time after their second vaccination (around 12 weeks). The earlier we can introduce gentle handling, water and the sound of clippers, the easier every groom for the rest of their life.

What happens if my puppy gets upset?

We stop, take a break, give them a treat and try again when they're ready. There's no rule that says a groom has to finish in one session. Sometimes the best thing we can do is leave a bit until next time.

Can I stay with my puppy for the first appointment?

If you'd like to, yes, especially for the meet-and-sniff at the start. Most puppies actually settle better once their owner is in the other room, but you're welcome to be there if you'd rather.

Should my puppy be tired before the groom?

A short walk beforehand can help, but don't exhaust them. A puppy that's calm and content settles best. Avoid feeding them within an hour of the appointment.

What should I bring?

A vaccination card the first time, a familiar treat if they have a favourite, and your phone for the proud post-groom photo. That's it.
