Lagoon swims and Calder mud, and what I see on Horbury coats
If your dog walks Horbury, I can usually tell from the coat. Down at Horbury Lagoon, off Forge Lane, plenty of dogs can't resist a swim in the lagoon or a paddle in the River Calder, and they come home with a damp, silty coat. That needs proper drying right down to the skin rather than a quick towel and out the door. A wet coat left to dry on its own is exactly how knots start, so I take the time to dry and brush it through.
The Calder and Hebble Navigation towpath through Horbury Bridge is the other big one. It turns to mud and standing puddles after any rain, and that grit works its way into feathering on the legs, belly and feet. I check those areas closely and clear out anything caught before it tightens into a mat.
Carr Lodge and the Coxley Valley woods
Carr Lodge Park keeps things gentler, with circular paths and grass rather than deep water, but the woodland walks are a different story. Up through Coxley Valley and Stoneycliffe Wood, between Horbury Bridge, Netherton and Middlestown, dogs pick up burrs, seeds and leaf litter that hide in longer coats. If your dog favours those routes, mention it when you book so I can set aside time to comb the coat out thoroughly rather than rushing it.
Whatever the walk, I groom one dog at a time in a quiet converted garage at Hall Green. There are no kennels and no other dogs around, which suits nervous, rescue and older dogs.

Frequently asked
Grooming in Horbury, your questions
My dog swims at Horbury Lagoon. Can you sort the coat afterwards?
Yes, that's a common one. After a swim in the lagoon or the River Calder I dry the coat right down to the skin and brush it through, because a damp coat left to dry on its own is how knots and matting begin.
We walk the Calder and Hebble towpath at Horbury Bridge. Does the mud cause problems?
It can. The towpath gets very muddy and puddled after rain, and grit works into the feathering on legs, belly and feet. I check and clear those areas carefully so it doesn't tighten into a mat before your next groom.
Do dogs pick up much from the Coxley Valley and Stoneycliffe woods?
Often, yes. Burrs, seeds and leaf litter hide in longer coats from the wooded routes around Horbury Bridge, Netherton and Middlestown. Tell me if your dog walks there and I'll set aside time to comb it all out properly.
How far is the salon from Horbury?
About 3.5 miles, a ten-minute drive from Horbury to Castle Meadows in Hall Green (WF4).
Do you groom rescue dogs?
Often. The quiet home setup is ideal for a rescue still building confidence, with no other dogs around and no rush. Tell me the background when you book and I'll take it gently.
