Up the A61 from the S75 villages
Mapplewell and Staincross sit close together at the north edge of Barnsley, former nail-making and pit villages that still feel like proper villages. The A61 Barnsley Road runs due north from here through Staincross and on past Newmillerdam, and I'm a short way off it in Hall Green. Reckon on about 4.5 miles and a 13-minute drive. It's far enough out that a quiet, unhurried groom is a real change from a busy high-street salon, and close enough that it's an easy trip.
I groom one dog at a time in a converted garage at home, with no kennels and no row of dryers going at once, so your dog is seen, finished and back home rather than left waiting in a crate.
What Bar Lane and Mapplewell Park do to a coat
If you walk the green at Mapplewell Park off Bar Lane, or take the lanes round Staincross Common and Ibberson Park, you'll know what a Yorkshire winter does to a coat. Wet grass, churned-up paths and the odd mat works in behind the ears and under the legs. Damp playing fields and long verges build knots fast, and a soaked spaniel or doodle picks them up quicker than most.
I'm IPET-qualified, trained at Mrs B's Grooming Academy in Leeds, so the welfare side is done properly. I check the coat, ears and nails, and I'll tell you straight if something needs watching. I handle full grooms, bath and tidy and de-matting, and I'll never shave a matted coat off for the sake of speed without explaining why first.
Booking from Mapplewell and Staincross
Full grooms are £40 small, £50 medium and £60 large or doodle, with puppy first grooms, bath and tidy, nail trims and de-matting alongside, and I'll confirm the price before I start. Parking is right outside on Castle Meadows, so from the S75 side it's a clear run north on the A61 and a short turn into Hall Green, with no town-centre traffic to fight through.

Frequently asked
Grooming in Mapplewell & Staincross, your questions
How far is the salon from Mapplewell and Staincross?
About 4.5 miles, roughly a 13-minute drive. Head north up the A61 Barnsley Road through Staincross towards Newmillerdam, and I'm a short way off it on Castle Meadows in Hall Green (WF4).
Do you groom dogs from across the S75 area?
Yes. I see plenty of dogs from Mapplewell, Staincross, Darton and Kexbrough, and from the wider S75 villages. It's a straight run up the A61, so most owners are with me inside fifteen minutes.
My dog gets matted after walks at Mapplewell Park. Can you help?
I can. The damp grass and churned paths off Bar Lane build knots fast, especially behind the ears and under the legs. I offer de-matting from £10 and will always talk you through the kindest option rather than clipping a coat off without explaining first.
We walk the lanes round Staincross Common. Will mud and burrs be a problem?
Only if they're left to set. A bath and tidy lifts out the mud and any seeds or burrs the verges leave behind, and I'll check the feathering on legs and ears where they tend to cling. Bring your dog in before it all mats and it's a quick job.
My dog is nervous or a rescue. Is the calm salon a better fit?
Often, yes. There's only ever one dog here, with no kennels and no crowd of other dogs, so it stays quiet from start to finish. Nervous and rescue dogs tend to settle far better than they would in a busy commercial salon.
Is there parking, and is the drive from the Barnsley side straightforward?
Parking is right outside on Castle Meadows, so you pull up at the door. From the S75 villages it's a clear run north on the A61 past Newmillerdam, then a short turn into Hall Green, with no town-centre traffic to fight through.
