Straight off the Pugneys path and into a warm bath

If you walk a dog in Sandal, you almost certainly know Pugneys. The two lakes (the big watersports one and the smaller nature reserve) pull in spaniels and retrievers who can't resist a swim, and that lake water leaves coats greasy, flat and faintly pondy. Loop round on the riverside path beside the River Calder towards Horbury and you'll add proper mud to the mix, while the woodland on the witches trail is where I find burrs and seeds worked deep into feathering and tails.

There's a dog wash on site at Pugneys, but a quick rinse only gets the surface. I take coats right back to clean and properly dry, down to the skin so wet feathering and undercoat don't sit damp and start to smell or knit into mats. A lot of my Sandal regulars book me in straight after a morning round the lake.

Sandal Castle, Castle Grove and the climb home

The other big draw is the free climb up to Sandal Castle, the ruined motte-and-bailey that looks down over Pugneys and Castle Grove. The slopes up to the motte and the rougher grass around the old earthworks are grand for a dog, but they pick up clay and dust that dulls a coat, and the steeper, drier ground is hard on pads and claws, which I always check over.

I'm a short run from all of it. From Barnsley Road, the A61 through Sandal, it's roughly 2.2 miles and about six minutes south to me in Hall Green, so there's no need to head into Wakefield centre for a groom. I see plenty of dogs from Sandal Magna, Agbrigg and Belle Vue too.

One dog at a time, the way it should be

My salon is a quiet converted garage at home. It's one dog at a time, with no kennels and no other dogs around, which suits nervous or older dogs and any pup that finds a busy high-street salon too much. I'm IPET-qualified and groom every coat type, with full grooms, puppy first grooms, bath and tidy, nail trims and de-matting, and I'll confirm the price with you before I start.

Maybe your dog needs a regular tidy, a gentle first puppy groom, or rescuing after one swim too many at Pugneys. Either way, booking in is a quick call, WhatsApp or message away.

Frequently asked

Grooming in Sandal, your questions

My dog swims at Pugneys. Can you sort the lake water out?

Yes, that's one of the most common reasons Sandal dogs come to me. Lake water leaves a coat flat and a bit smelly, so I bathe, double-rinse and fully dry down to the skin so nothing sits damp. A bath and tidy is usually enough, but book a full groom if it needs a trim too.

We do the riverside and witches-trail walk. Do you get burrs and mud out?

I do. The Calder riverside path and the wooded witches trail are great for burrs, seeds and caked mud in feathering and tails. I work them out gently rather than dragging at the coat, and if it's badly matted I'll talk you through de-matting versus a tidy clip.

How far is the salon from Sandal?

About 2.2 miles, roughly a six-minute drive south to Castle Meadows in Hall Green (WF4), an easy run down Barnsley Road, the A61. No trip into Wakefield centre needed.

Do you cover Sandal Magna, Agbrigg and Belle Vue as well?

Yes. Sandal and the wider WF2 area are well within my patch and I see regulars from Sandal Magna, Agbrigg and Belle Vue every week. It's the same short hop down the A61 to Hall Green for all of them.

Can you do my Sandal puppy's first groom?

Happily. The calm one-dog-at-a-time setup is ideal for a first experience. I keep it short and gentle so the pup learns it's a friendly place. Usually from around 12 weeks, after the second vaccination.

How do I book my Sandal dog in?

A quick call, WhatsApp or message to 07926 471552 is all it takes. I like a short chat about your dog's coat, age and temperament first so I can set aside the right amount of time, then I'll confirm a drop-off and pick-up that suits you.
