Towpath and riverside walks that follow your dog home
Calder Grove sits where the River Calder and the Calder & Hebble Navigation run side by side, and most local dogs end up on that flat towpath sooner or later, out past the Navigation Inn on Broad Cut Road, which sits on its own island between the river and the canal. It's lovely walking, but canal and river water leaves a coat smelling of silt, and the soft towpath edges churn to mud after rain. If your dog wades in at the bank, that water gets down to the skin and into the feathering on the legs and belly, exactly where it stays damp and starts to smell.
Follow the towpath far enough and you can reach Pugneys Country Park and its lakes. It's a popular off-lead loop, and your dog will come back wet and sandy. I'll get all of that rinsed out properly and dried right through rather than just towelled off.
Coxley Valley mud and spring burrs
Plenty of Calder Grove dogs get walked up into Coxley Woods, in the valley running from Horbury Bridge towards Netherton and Middlestown. There's a stream dogs love to paddle and dam-build in, oak and birch overhead, and wet, alder-lined patches that stay claggy long after the path looks dry. In spring it carpets with bluebells and wild garlic, and that undergrowth is where burrs, seeds and twigs work into a longer coat. Bring me a dog that's been crashing through Coxley and I'll de-matt the legs and belly and clear out anything tangled in.
Closer in, the Crigglestone Viaduct and the field paths off Stocksmoor Lane give muddier, more open going. That's fine for a quick blast, less fine for a feathered coat in winter.
A calm one-dog room, two miles up the A636
I'm a two-mile, six-minute run across the A636 from Calder Grove, with parking right outside on Castle Meadows. I groom one dog at a time in a quiet converted garage, with no kennels and no other dogs around, which suits the towpath regulars, nervous rescues and puppies on their first groom.
I'm IPET-qualified and cover full grooms, bath and tidy, nail trims and de-matting, and I'll confirm the price before I start. To book, give me a quick call or message and tell me a bit about your dog and where they've been walking.

Frequently asked
Grooming in Calder Grove, your questions
My dog swims in the canal at Broad Cut, can you sort the smell?
That's a regular one with the towpath dogs near the Navigation. Canal and river water gets right into the undercoat and feathering and leaves that silty smell, so I bath thoroughly, rinse it all out and dry the coat right down to the skin rather than giving it a quick towel-off.
Will you clear burrs and matting after Coxley Woods?
Yes. Coxley Valley undergrowth and the bluebell banks are notorious for working seeds, twigs and burrs into a longer coat, and the stream leaves the legs and belly matted. I'll work it all out gently, de-matt where needed and tidy the feathering.
How far is the salon from Calder Grove?
About two miles, a six-minute drive across the A636 to Castle Meadows in Hall Green, WF4, with parking right outside the door.
Do you cover the Calder Grove side of Crigglestone?
Yes. Calder Grove and the western side of Crigglestone, just off the Denby Dale Road, are well within my patch. It's a short, direct run across the A636, and plenty of dogs from around here come to me on a regular cycle.
My dog gets nervous, is it quieter than a busy salon?
Much quieter. There's only ever the one dog in the converted garage, with no kennels and no other dogs around, so there's nothing barking and no rush. Tell me the background when you book and I'll go gently and take breaks when needed.
